India’s expected roll out of new data protection laws has experts calling for no limitations on the collection and use of data, Business Standard reports. Following the Supreme Court’s decision, which established a right to privacy, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology constructed a Committee of Experts to “study and identify key data protection issues and recommend methods for addressing them.” Sunil Abraham, executive director at the Centre for Internet and Society, said, “The Supreme Court judgment calls for production of a new law.” Abraham noted, “While the regulator should be given tools to make companies behave better, it should not start with harsh punitive actions.”
