Euractiv reports European Commission Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager stated the use of facial-recognition technology for the purpose of automatic identification violates the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Vestager claimed the lack of explicit consent involved with the technology's deployment violates Article 6 of the GDPR. "As it stands right now, (the) GDPR would say ‘don’t use it’, because you cannot get consent,” Vestager said, adding the European Commission plans to take its time formulating facial-recognition legislation.
