The Veterans Benefits Administration kept claims files unredacted, leaving millions of veterans’ doctors, spouses and dependents vulnerable to identity theft, Nextgov reports. In May 2016, officials stopped redacting personal information, including names and Social Security numbers, of third-party individuals in claims files to reduce processing time. The Office of the Inspector General said, “the [policy] could place VBA at legal risk of penalties for Privacy Act violations based on other more recent case law.” The agency agreed with the OIG’s recommendations to update current disclosure policies on its website, improve oversight of its records management process, and incorporate steps to ensure staff follows privacy provisions.
