U.S. telecoms diplomat Doreen Bogdan-Martin was elected to head the United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union, Politico reports. Bogdan-Martin received 139 votes to secure the election over Russia’s Rashid Ismailov, who received 25 votes. The vote was viewed by observers as a clash between western countries' "vision of a more open version of the internet against more authoritarian" control of cyberspace from the likes of Russia and Saudi Arabia. Bogdan-Martin replaces China’s Houlin Zhao at the head of the ITU, which she had led since 2014.
