Following the passage of the Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act, the U.S. Supreme Court dropped a case involving Microsoft and the Department of Justice, declaring the case moot, Reuters reports. While Microsoft had previously challenged a domestic warrant issued by a U.S. judge for emails stored on a Microsoft server in Ireland, the CLOUD Act provides an avenue for companies to object if it conflicts with foreign law. In an unsigned opinion, the court said, “No live dispute remains between the parties over the issue.” Previously, both Microsoft and the DOJ agreed the case should be dismissed.
