The U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform has scheduled part one of the "Facial Recognition Technology" hearing for next Wednesday. The first session will discuss the impacts of facial-recognition tech on citizens' civil rights and liberties. The hearing is timely given the recent ban of facial recognition in San Francisco and other facial-recognition issues sprouting up around the country. The Verge reports the New York Police Department has several issues with the abuse of its facial-recognition tech, including image revision and using images of non-suspects. Chicago and Detroit are among U.S. cities that are buying into real-time facial recognition for various uses, according to a report from Wired. Facial-recognition tech producers in China expect to benefit most from the rise in consumer demand as CNBC reports the country plans to be the world leader in artificial intelligence by 2030 and spend $9.6 billion on facial recognition by 2022.
