The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce scheduled a markup July 20 that includes the proposed American Data Privacy and Protection Act. Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Rep. Frank Pallone, D-N.J., called the markup "a critical step" toward passing legislation, adding that it's "long past time for Congress to protect the data privacy and security of all Americans." An amended version of the bill will be circulated to the committee ahead of the markup session. Meanwhile, MediaPost reports a coalition of advertising trade groups sent a letter to the committee asking it to consider an opt-out consent model for targeting advertising in the proposed law.
