A debate pitting the government against tech companies has now come to a showdown after Apple CEO Tim Cook late Tuesday announced the company will not comply with a federal court order that it help the FBI unlock the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino shooters, The New York Times reports. In a win for the government, Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym ordered Apple to provide technical assistance to disable the phone’s password-wipe function — after 10 incorrect password attempts, the phone erases its data — so that authorities could “brute force” the phone’s password. Hours later, Cook announced the company would fight the order. In a message to Apple customers, the company wrote, “This moment calls for public discussion, and we want our customers and people around the country to understand what is at stake.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
