The U.S. District Court of Massachusetts has ruled warrantless searches of phones and laptops at airports and ports of entry violate the Fourth Amendment, The Associated Press reports. The American Civil Liberties Union and Electronic Frontier Foundation filed a class-action lawsuit on behalf of 11 travelers who were subject to warrantless searches, which increased to 40,913 over the last year, according to Customs and Border Protection. ACLU Staff Attorney Esha Bhandari said the decision against "suspicionless fishing expeditions" reaffirms "that the border is not a lawless place and that we don’t lose our privacy rights when we travel."
