Membership reward service Upromise will pay a $500,000 civil penalty to settle claims that it had violated the Federal Trade Commission's 2012 order mandating that the company both gather third-party assessments of its data collection toolbar and provide disclosures about its data collection, the agency reports. “Upromise once again didn’t disclose to consumers the extent of its data collection, and failed to comply with the FTC’s order to get required privacy assessments,” said the FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Acting Director Tom Pahl. “Companies must keep their privacy promises.” In addition to the fine, the FTC's stipulated order also requires Upromise to have a third-party professional verify that its toolbar adheres to FTC requirements should they launch a new iteration in the future, among other mandates.
