When consumers fall behind on credit bills, companies sometimes offer a solution called "credit washing," which involves an individual filing a claim with their lender that they are a victim of identity theft, stating the account is not theirs. But as Consumer First Coalition Executive Director Jason Kratovil, CIPP/US, writes, this "scam" has become a "growing problem for financial institutions, as well as for legitimate victims of identity theft."
