In a report presented to the General Assembly, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy Joe Cannataci warned against the government release of personal data under open data schemes without privacy safeguards, Scoop reports. His report also raised concerns about a “vacuum in international law concerning surveillance and privacy in cyberspace.” Cannataci said, “I am concerned not just by the collection of this information, but that firms have the ability to sell or trade it and to link it to other data to produce a complex and detailed picture of a person’s life.” Cannataci will seek public comment on how to integrate privacy into the information economy ahead of a scheduled international conference in March 2018 and is also currently working on developing recommendations for a treaty to close the gap concerning surveillance and privacy.
