While delivering remarks on an annual report on privacy, United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy Joseph Cannataci discussed privacy and surveillance concerns stemming from COVID-19 contact tracing. "This is a very disturbing trend; all-pervasive surveillance is no panacea for COVID-19," Cannataci said. "I urgently remind states that any responses to the coronavirus must be proportionate, necessary and non-discriminatory." Cannataci also spoke on concerns related to the use of health and patient data to curb COVID-19 spread.
