BBC News reports the U.K. has opted to abandon its COVID-19 contact-tracing app in favor of Google and Apple's app. The switch from the centralized approach to Google and Apple's decentralized system means U.K. epidemiologists will have less access to data. Trials of the centralized app on the Isle of Wight forced the change as the app did not accurately detect some mobile devices. Meanwhile, the European Commission has granted its seal of excellence to crowd monitoring facial recognition tech AWARE.
