The U.K. Supreme Court ruled the Government Communications Headquarters’ Investigatory Powers Tribunal is subject to judicial review in the High Court, ZDNet reports. The IPT is responsible for security activities conducted by U.K. intelligence agencies, such as the GCHQ, MI5 and MI6. Back in 2014, Privacy International launched a case to challenge GCHQ’s ability to hack millions of devices. The IPT determined in 2016 the U.K. government had the right to issue warrants for the wide-scale hacking, a decision ultimately overturned by the Supreme Court. “The legal issue decided by the IPT is not only one of general public importance, but also has possible implications for legal rights and remedies going beyond the scope of the IPT's remit,” Lord Robert Carnwath wrote in the ruling.
