BBC News reports the U.K. government proposed the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill, which aims to prevent hacking of smart devices in individuals' households. The draft law would ban default passwords pre-loaded to devices and carries provisions regarding timely notification of cybersecurity updates for devices. A new regulator would enforce the law and have the power to serve fines up to 10 million GBP or 4% of a company's global turnover and an additional 20,000 GBP a day for ongoing violations.
