In a speech delivered Sept. 3, U.K. Home Secretary Sajid Javid spoke on protecting children from abuse, particularly from online exploitation, outlining opportunities in public-private partnerships to curb the proliferation of abuse. In the speech, Javid stated the National Crime Agency conservatively estimates 80,000 people in the U.K. present some kind of sexual threat to children online and that since 2013, there has been a 700 percent increase in the number of referrals to the NCA for this type of content. Javid called for effective partnerships and said, “I am also pushing for expectations about how companies deal with online child sexual exploitation to be included in the Code of Practice that we are already asking technology companies to abide by.”
