Politico reports that U.K. government officials "privately drew up a paper before the summer" warning that not striking a Brexit deal on the transfer of personal data would result in "substantial disruption" and "significant legal costs" for business. The document was prepared for ministers on the Domestic Preparedness, Legislation and Devolution cabinet sub-committee, and, according to the report, the paper "presents a much starker picture of the implications of the U.K. not striking a data protection deal" with the EU than was publicly presented by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in early September. The U.K. government had recommended standard contractural clauses as the most relevant means of transfer data post-Brexit. A spokesman for the U.K. government said it would continue to seek an agreement, "particularly [one that includes] the free flow of personal data, as well as regulatory cooperation."
