Within the next six weeks, ministers will reveal whether the U.K. government will create a new regulator for internet companies in order to “break up monopolies,” the Financial Times reports. A white paper on the prevention of online harms has been in the works and is expected to be released in mid-March. One of the topics under discussion for the report is whether a regulator is needed to rein in online organizations. U.K. Shadow Digital Secretary Tom Watson believes the regulator should be responsible for competition policy and have the power to refer cases to the Competition and Markets Authority. “The era of self-regulation of the internet is coming to an end,” U.K. Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Jeremy Wright said. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
