Car service Uber has been in the hot seat since Senior VP Emil Michael suggested it hire researchers to dig up dirt on journalists who use the service and reports came out that a manager accessed ride logs of a journalist who was critical of Uber, The Washington Post reports. Experts are raising privacy concerns about companies that collect vast amounts of personal information and their ability to potentially use it against their customers. UC Berkeley Law Prof. Chris Hoofnagle said, “We have never in history been at a point where we were more extort-able,” adding, “We have to think about how the service provider itself can be a threat.” Uber has since apologized for the incident and updated its privacy policy to limit data use.
