An administrative law judge ruled Uber must pay a $59.1 million fine to the California Public Utilities Commission for noncompliance with requests for sexual assault data from the company, Business Insider reports. CPUC sought personal data on the assault survivors, including names and contact information, without their consent. "These punitive and confusing actions will do nothing to improve public safety and will only create a chilling effect as other companies consider releasing their own reports," an Uber spokesperson said. "Transparency should be encouraged, not punished."
