The U.S. Supreme Court dismissed CareFirst’s appeal to have its data breach case heard, FierceHealthcare reports. The case stemmed from a 2014 data breach exposing 1.1 million records, followed by a three-judge panel ruling the potential harm associated with identity theft was enough for a class-action complaint to move forward. The insurer previously warned the Supreme Court a wave of class-action lawsuits could be on the horizon if its case was not heard. CareFirst’s appeal would have marked the first data breach case to have been heard by the Supreme Court.
