Turkey’s data protection authority, the Kişisel Verileri Koruma Kurumu, published draft guidelines for the processing of genetic data. The KVKK considers genetic data under the umbrella of “sensitive personal data” under the Law on the Protection of Personal Data. The KVKK stated, “it is necessary to bind the processing of genetic data to certain rules and procedures, as well as to raise awareness in the social field,” because the mishandling of genetic data could have negative outcomes both for individuals and for the national security and the economy.
