U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday designed to bolster the nation's critical infrastructure and cyber defenses, Reuters reports. The move is aimed to curb damaging cyberattacks, like the one that hit the U.S. Office of Personnel Management in which millions of personal records were compromised. The order also looks to enhance critical infrastructure, including the energy grid and financial sector. Thus far, cybersecurity professionals and industries have backed the order. Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert said the order builds on Obama-era efforts in cybersecurity. Notably, leaders of federal agencies must employ a National Institute of Standards and Technology–developed framework to assess and manage cyber risk, the report states, and create reports within 90 days demonstrating how the new changes will be implemented.
