Lawyers for commodities trader Trafigura have cited the EU General Data Protection Regulation for its refusal to hand over emails related to a case in which two former executives in Brazil face corruption charges, Reuters reports. The officials have been accused of bribing officials at the Petroleo Brasileiro oil firm. Federal prosecutors from Brazil have demanded the Switzerland-based Trafigura produce the emails to determine whether other executives knew of the bribes. Trafigura Limited sent a letter in which it told its Brazilian subsidiary it needs to investigate its responsibilities to the GDPR and other countries’ privacy laws. The company cited the GDPR penalties it could face if it violated the rules in documents filed to the court.
