The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has launched a joint investigation with the commissioners in British Columbia, Quebec and Alberta into Clearview AI. This announcement comes after CBC News reports the Toronto and Waterloo police agencies have admitted to using the facial-recognition technology. A Toronto Police Service spokesperson said officers have been “informally testing” facial recognition since Oct. 2019, but Police Chief Mark Saunders has ordered them to stop until a “fulsome review” is completed.
