In an op-ed, Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien called for the federal government to provide Canadians with a strong data privacy law that "recognizes privacy as a fundamental human right." Therrien cites movement toward data privacy laws reaffirming privacy as a right in Ontario and Quebec, as examples for Parliament to follow. Additionally, he called for "true regulation, meaning objective and knowable standards adopted democratically," acknowledging consumer trust in the digital economy has eroded following data breaches and violations.
