Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien discussed encryption battles and enforcement challenges in an interview with Motherboard at the IAPP Canada Privacy Symposium 2016 in Toronto. “Encryption absolutely needs to be there, and promoted,” Therrien said. “The police have a job to do, but they have to do it within the law.” When asked about the seeming delay between privacy breaches and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner’s enforcement actions, he reiterated his suggestion for Privacy Act amendments. “On playing catch-up, we can only advise on issues that we’re informed on,” he said. “Federal institutions … should have a legal obligation to inform the privacy commissioner’s office of initiatives, programs, that involve privacy.”
