Canadian Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien requested that the Government Operations Centre review its surveillance practices of lawful, peaceful protests, the Toronto Star reports. The agency was found to have collected information regarding more than 800 such protests in 2014. “In [the request] we asked that a more detailed analysis of the privacy risks relating to monitoring of public protests and demonstrations be undertaken and given to us to review,” said Therrien spokeswoman Tobi Cohen in a statement. “We are actively consulting with Public Safety on this file to make sure that we, and the Canadian public, have a full understanding of how personal information is being collected and shared under this program.”
