Speaking in front of a parliamentary committee, Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien once again called on the federal government to reform federal laws to have political parties covered under privacy legislation, the Ottawa Citizen reports. Without an independent party to monitor their data use, political parties only have to follow any privacy policies they implement themselves. Therrien cited New Zealand, the U.K. and many EU member states as countries where political parties are covered under federal rules, adding it is time Canada joins the list. “Neither I nor any other independent person can verify what’s going on,” Therrien said. “If there was ever a time for action, I think frankly, this is it.”
