A user's avatar may be pseudonymous — the company operating the metaverse knows the account identity. Despite the pseudonymity, there could still be some kind of authentication requirement before a user logs into the metaverse that would be identifiable. The authors write the metaverse may pose regulatory challenges with users from multiple countries with different data protection regimes.
