Hong Kong's Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data announced telecommunications company Hong Kong Broadband Network has been fined HK$12,000 after pleading guilty to six charges under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. A complaint before the commissioner claimed the company used an individual’s personal data in direct marketing without their consent and failed to stop following an opt-out request. Privacy Commissioner Stephen Kai-yi Wong said the case demonstrates the importance of “relevant privacy policies, procedures and guidelines,” as well as training employees to properly handle customers’ data.
