Citing cases of “phone snooping” over the past few years, Press Trust of India reports “Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said privacy of people is in ‘danger’ and separate law may be required to check intrusion of individuals' personal space.” Recent controversies include alleged spying at the request of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and phone-tapping incidents involving various politicians. “Privacy is very much in danger,” Sibal said, adding that with the development in communication technologies, privacy is being reduced. “In that process, if an individual cannot feel confident and safe that there are certain aspects of his life which are very personal, then I think there is danger to democracy,” Sibal said.
