Tanzania has introduced a new law to target online platforms, including blogs, podcasts and streaming content, requiring them to join a national registry and pay a $900 license, VOA reports. The government has noted the law will help monitor and control online content, prompting many to voice concern that the law is part of a larger effort to limit the public’s growing dissent to President John Magufuli’s administration. Online platforms and administrators have until May 5 to comply with the new law. Failure to do so could result in fines and up to a year in jail.
