Thousands of people in Sweden have voluntarily implanted hyper-connected microchips into their bodies to speed up daily routines and increase convenience, NPR reports. While the chips are designed to aid in everything from accessing buildings to storing membership details, e-ticket information, and emergency contacts, proponents argue the chips are relatively safe from hacking. Currently, there is no legislation regulating microchip implementation in Sweden, but Ben Libberton, a trained microbiologist working in science communication, is urging lawmakers to monitor developments. He said, "What is happening now is relatively safe. But if it's used everywhere, if every time you want to do something and instead of using a card you use your chip, it could be very, very easy to let go of [personal] information."
