The House Energy and Commerce Committee passed a bill levying heavy punishments for individuals committing the prank known as “swatting,” The Washington Post reports. Swatting is a form of online trolling that targets an individual by locating their home, calls the police to report a crime at that home — such as a bomb threat — with the intention of generating a SWAT team response. The practice has been used against gamers, journalists, politicians and celebrities. The bill defines the act as "the transmission of misleading or inaccurate caller identification information with the intent to trigger a response by a law enforcement agency." The bill would impose significant fines and potential jail time of up to 20 years. It now makes its way to the House floor for a vote.
