The Supreme Court of the United States will clarify the meaning of “unauthorized access” in a Computer Fraud and Abuse Act case, TechCrunch reports. The court will decide whether a former police sergeant exceeded his access to a license plate database. Stanford Law School Associate Director of Surveillance and Cybersecurity Riana Pfefferkorn said the court’s opinion could decide whether “millions of ordinary Americans are committing a federal crime whenever they engage in computer activities that, while common, don’t comport with an online service or employer’s terms of use.”
