According to a recent study, patients are selective about the personal health data they are willing to share, Health Data Management reports. Two-thirds of the 1,246 patients surveyed said they are comfortable sharing their electronic health record data and biospecimens for research purposes, 3.7% would decline to share their information with their health care–providing institution, and 28.3% and 47% would not share information with nonprofit or for-profit institutions, respectively. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 85% of physicians are using some sort of EHR system and “need to inform patients about what information they will be sharing, what the data will be used for, and the benefits to them, if any,” the report said.
