In his first public remarks since joining Stanford University, Alex Stamos, Facebook’s former chief security officer, said the tech industry needs a system of checks and balances to assist companies that are working in areas of security and democratic expression, The Washington Post reports. Stamos announced a new initiative, the Stanford Internet Observatory, to support what he calls “sometimes warring factions” of academia, tech companies and policymakers so that they may find a solution for “the negative impacts technology can have on society.” Aiming to help tech companies in their investigations, the initiative will serve to act as “a bridge between multiple platforms fighting the same problems.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
