The Spanish Data Protection Agency, the AEPD, has fined soccer league La Liga 250,000 euros for alleged violations of the EU General Data Protection Regulation, eldiario.es reports. La Liga was found to have used a mobile app to determine whether bars had pirated soccer matches via a user’s microphone. The league could activate the app remotely to determine whether a location had emitted a “pirate” signal to stream events. The AEPD found La Liga did not abide by the GDPR’s transparency provisions, nor did it allow users to withdraw their consent for their data to be used in such a manner.
