Spam calls are on the rise and expected to get worse, The Boston Globe reports. The Federal Trade Commission says it received 3.5 million complaints about spam calls in 2015, and, in 2016, the number rose to 5.3 million. That's partly because robocalls are cheap to make and don't require a lot of human labor. Today, marketers can employ "internet-based VoIP phone systems and programs that can systematically place hundreds of calls at once," the report states, so even if one person out of one million "takes the bait," it's still a profitable model. Plus, if a person answers the call, and the spammer realizes the phone number is valid, oftentimes that phone number will then be sold to additional spammers looking for live bait. While the FTC and FCC are toying with ideas on how to stop the problem, for now, the onus lies on the consumer to avoid picking up the phone when that unknown number calls.
