The Spanish government has adopted a decree-law adapting its data protection legislation to the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Royal Decree-Law 5/2018, of July 27, containing urgent measures to adapt the Spanish legislation to the European Union law on data protection, was published in the official gazette July 30. Miguel Recio writes for Privacy Tracker that "The main reason to adopt this royal decree-law is to enable the Spanish data protection authority to carry out administrative proceedings according to the GDPR." Congress has been working toward legislation to implement the GDPR since 2016, and, Recio writes, "according to recent news, the new Organic Law on the Protection of Personal Data might be passed before the end of 2018."
