South African insurer Liberty Holdings confirmed it refused to pay a ransom demand after hackers breached its system, Bloomberg reports. Liberty CEO David Munro said, “We did engage with the external parties involved to determine their intentions, but we made no concession in the face of this attempted extortion,” adding, “Liberty is at an advanced stage of investigating the extent of the data breach, which at this stage, seems to be largely emails and possibly attachments.” Liberty informed customers of the data breach via text but no further details of the breach were provided due to the ongoing investigation. South Africa’s information regulator, which is not yet fully operational, requested an “urgent meeting” with Liberty’s CEO.
