The New York Times reports on the questions over times when “the free flow of personal data benefit consumers, and when might it damage their pocketbooks,” as discussed by Google’s Hal Varian and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chief Technologist Ashkan Soltani at a recent conference on big data. Soltani argued “online data-mining is so opaque to consumers that it can lead to unfair financial treatment,” the report states. Meanwhile, in a blog for The Hill, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation’s Daniel Castro and Alan McQuinn write about the FTC’s case against Nomi Technologies, arguing, “Just because you have a stick, that does not mean you should always use it to hit someone.”
