Whistleblower Edward Snowden has criticized Russia’s proposed anti-terror “Yarovaya law,” calling their surveillance mandates dangerous, CNET reports. The legislation would require internet service providers to store user communication records for six months and metadata for three years, the report states. Snowden, who lives in Russia as a political refugee, called the anti-terrorism measures “Big Brother Law" in a tweet. They are "unworkable, unjustifiable violation of rights that should never be signed," he added. "Mass surveillance doesn't work. This bill will take money and liberty from every Russian without improving safety. It should not be signed." The laws still need approval from Russia’s upper house and President Vladimir Putin, “which actions are said to be near certainties,” the report adds.
