In a video conference keynote address at the annual Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, whistleblower Edward Snowden called the EU General Data Protection Regulation a “paper tiger” and said international data privacy laws don’t go far enough, Forbes reports. The problem isn’t data protection, Snowden said, but data collection and the assumption that it is appropriate and without danger. “The law is not the only thing that can protect you,” he said. “Technology is not the only thing that can protect you. We are the only thing that can protect us. And the only way to protect anyone is to protect everyone.”
