Five U.S. senators are asking the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Inspector General to investigate Customs and Border Protection’s warrantless surveillance of phones, Vice reports. In a letter, the senators said the agency confirmed it uses a location database “to search for information collected from phones in the United States without any kind of court order.” They also state CBP “outrageously” asserts its legal authority for doing so is “privileged” and does not need to be shared with Congress.
