Sen. Edward Markey (D-MA), together with a group of Democratic senators, has sent the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) a letter urging it to maintain the privacy provisions within the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). The FCC is currently assessing whether it should allow for liability exemptions when auto-dialers make three calls to consumers without their consent and whether industries may send unsolicited texts or calls in certain situations. “These proposals would threaten privacy and result in an increase in disruptive and annoying calls for American consumers,” the letter states. “We strongly urge the FCC to maintain the TCPA’s privacy protections and to continue to protect consumers from unwanted calls.”
