Following Equifax’s data breach last week, a group of Democratic senators has introduced the Data Broker Accountability and Transparency Act to hold the data-broker industry accountable for breaches, Broadcasting & Cable reports. The bill would allow consumers to access and correct their information and also give consumers the ability to stop brokers from using, sharing or selling personal information for marketing purposes. Additionally, the bill would require data brokers to develop comprehensive privacy and data security programs and to provide reasonable notice in the case of breaches. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., also announced she has launched an investigation into Equifax’s data breach and has plans to introduce a bill that would give consumers the ability to freeze their credit for free.
