Following the unauthorized disclosure of confidential tax returns to a media outlet, U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, requested a review of the Internal Revenue Service’s data security practices and procedures. In a letter to the Government Accountability Office, Crapo said ProPublica reported it obtained “a vast trove” of IRS tax return data on “thousands of the nation’s wealthiest people.” The “apparent disclosure” warrants “increased government oversight to ensure that the IRS is implementing robust processes and procedures to fully protect tax filers’ personal data,” Crapo said.
